League of Legends

An extremely competitive multiplayer game displaying great design, creativity, and community involvement from Riot Games

Overview of the game

League of Legends is a game for PC where players are formed into 2 even teams of Champions, 3v3 or 5v5. As of 13 September 2012 there are 104 different champions from which to choose. Each player begins at opposing sides of a map in an area called the Spawning Pool, near what is called a Nexus. A match is won when either team's nexus is destroyed. To destroy a Nexus, each team must work through a series of Turrets placed along a path to each base referred to as a Lane. Along the way, each player gains levels from killing the opposing team's champions and Minions (NPCs that constantly spawn and attack the other team) and defeating neutral monsters. Completing objectives rewards players with gold which is used to purchase items.

Why League of Legends is my favorite multiplayer game

Below are my top three reasons in why I believe League of Legends is a great game...

1) Design - After getting past the fairly difficult learning curve I began to understand the game a lot more, and therefore truly admire the amount of design that has gone into League of Legends.  The very first picture in the slide show above displays the entire map named 'Summoners Rift'.  Summoner Rift is the primary of 4 maps, and has been designed with incredible precision and meticulous amounts of thought.  Everything about the game must be balanced, there isn't just one quick decision made to change an aspect of the game, it's a long process of testing within the company and then with the community itself.  The design put into League of Legends is done exceptionally well and keeps millions of players coming back.

2) Creativity - There are over 100 champions all with very unique skillsets that players can choose to play with over the course of a game.  The sheer amounts of creativity that went into designing each and every champion is immense.  Balancing is a necessity in a game such as this, for if one champion is overpowered  then players will abuse its power.  Every champion has a unique story behind it, a lore, that can be read and they all tie in to the universe that Riot Games created.

3) Community Involvement - Riot Games is great at listening to their fan base and trying to accommodate to their needs and requests within the game.  Whether it's using the forums on their website or posts on Redditt, Riot Games keeps a clear presence by responding to community questions and requests.

What I would change

It's difficult to say what I would change as League of Legends is quite a complex game with plenty of content.  I could get in-depth on how I would alter and change stats on items, or champions for that matter, however for someone to read this with little to no knowledge of the game that would be quite meaningless.  Below is the one thing that I have felt quite adament about for a long time.

Add more maps - Riot Games likes to release a new champion every two weeks as this appeals to their business model, however not enough time is spent to building new maps or even items that can be purchased in-game.  I believe that Riot is working on new content that just hasn't been released to the public yet, and if they are this news needs to be relayed to their fans.  With new maps they can expand on their competitive e-sports scene with teams excelling at different maps and using varying strategies.  A new map needs to happen, it's just a matter of when.
